Covid-19: New York pays R$500 to those who get vaccinated

This Wednesday (28), New York City announced that anyone could get $100 if they took the first dose of the vaccine against COVID-19. The incentive, which is equivalent to R$517 in current conversion, will start to be valid from Friday (30).

According to the data City-wide immunization record, about 41% of New Yorkers have not yet been vaccinated. So far, only 59.2% of the population has received at least the first dose of the immunizing agent.

The action takes place amid an increasing prevalence of delta variable in the country. This Tuesday (27), the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced that even fully vaccinated people should wear masks in areas with “significant or high transmission” of the virus.

According to the health agency’s map, every county in New York City has “significant” levels of transmission in the community. Thus, the new recommendations also apply to the municipality.

Last Monday (26th), Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that city public servants should get vaccinated by September 13th. If not, employees will undergo weekly tests for the covid-19 virus.

Experts agree to the incentive

US economists defend the idea of fiscal stimulus to combat vaccine hesitation. Some experts have suggested a reward of up to 1,000 USD – about 5,170 Rls in current transfer.

“If we somehow don’t get real immunity, our economy is going to work very hard on his chest,” said Robert Litan, chief economist at the Brookings Institution and a collaborator with the Bill Clinton administration.
