IAEA chief regrets Iran's failure to agree on nuclear program

The Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, expressed his regret, on Wednesday (24), on his return from Tehran, for the “no-deal” with Iran, at a time when the expansion of its nuclear program raises the concern of the international community.

“The negotiations were constructive, but we did not reach an agreement despite all my efforts,” Grossi told the press.

Among other senior officials in Tehran, Grossi spoke with Mohammad Eslami, who heads Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization.

He expected progress in various aspects of the dispute between the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Islamic Republic.

Among them, increasing Iran’s reserves of highly enriched uranium in response to US sanctions.

Grossi’s visit comes a week before talks resume in Vienna to salvage the international agreement on Iran’s nuclear energy, which has been suspended since June.

The agreement concluded in 2015 between Iran on the one hand and the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, France and Germany on the other hand, represented Tehran to lift some of the international sanctions that choked its economy, in return for a radical reduction of its program that was placed under strict supervision by the United Nations.

But the United States abandoned the agreement in 2018 under the presidency of Donald Trump and reimposed its sanctions. As a result, Tehran gradually abandoned its supposed obligations.
