The owner of six Grand Slam titles, including Wimbledon, has been sentenced to two years in prison for concealment 2.5 million pounds (about 15.5 million Brazilian riyals) to avoid paying debts with his bank and the state treasury.

In an interview with Watchman“Any foreign national who has been convicted of a crime and sentenced to imprisonment is liable to be deported at the earliest opportunity,” a British newspaper reported.

For this to happen, the British authorities could argue that Baker’s tax crimes continued after the law was implemented Britain’s exit from the European Unionwhich occurred in December 2020. If confirmed, current laws allow the ex-tennis player to be deported, as any sentence of more than one year in prison is subject to automatic deportation.

Baker will still have the right to appeal. However, since the former athlete would not have had British citizenship, this defense would be much more complicated. The appeal, according to jurists, can last from six to 12 months.
