The 324-meter-high iron tower, built by Gustave Eiffel at the end of the 19th century, is among the most visited tourist sites in the world, receiving about six million visitors annually.
However, confidential reports from experts cited by Marianne indicate that the monument is in poor condition and riddled with rust.
“It’s simple, if Gustave Eiffel visited the site, he would have a heart attack,” an unnamed tower manager told Marianne.
The company that oversees the tower, Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE), was not immediately reached for comment.
Marianne said about 30% of the tower was supposed to be stripped down to then be applied in two new coats, but delays in work due to the pandemic and the presence of lead in the old paint means only 5% will be cured.
He added that SETE is reluctant to close the tower for a long time due to the loss of tourism revenue.
