Nearly 2,000 workers at one of the UK’s largest commercial ports began an eight-day strike on Sunday over a wage dispute, in the latest news regarding the industrial sector hitting the country’s economy.
The stop should take place at Felixstowe, on the east coast of England, which handles about 4 million containers a year – nearly half of the country’s total – from 2,000 ships. With this, ships can be diverted to other ports in the UK or other European countries.
The strike comes as people across the UK struggle to travel for a third day this week, Saturday, with thousands of railway workers striking for better wages and job security amid rising inflation, particularly in the food and energy sector.
Only about 20% of the country’s trains are scheduled to run on their tracks this Saturday, with no service in some areas. Rail transport problems are expected to continue on Sunday, with more strikes expected according to union leaders.
On Friday, most London Underground lines were grounded, due to another strike. Postal service workers, lawyers, British Telecom employees and garbage collectors have announced a lockdown this month in the UK.
