The two countries signed an agreement in 2020 to go ahead with a joint bid to host the tournament and make it official in June.

“I am sure that the 2030 World Cup will take place in Spain and Portugal,” Ceferin said in a video conference at the opening of the International Conference on Football Talks in Lisbon on Monday.

“This nomination is the winner and we will do everything we can to help the two countries that are passionate about football, live and breathe football and have good infrastructure.”

Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay announced a South American four-way proposal that could have sentimental value, as Uruguay hosted the inaugural World Cup in 1930.

The four UK confederations contemplated a joint bid with Ireland, while Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece and Romania also planned a joint bid, although both were withdrawn.

In 2018, Morocco announced that it would bid to host the tournament in 2030, with later reports adding that it could be a partnership with Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Media reports indicated that China could also make its proposal.

Qatar will host the World Cup this year, followed by Canada, the United States and Mexico in 2026.
