Another UK rail strike leaves thousands of passengers without trains on Saturday 8 October 2022.
The strike is being led by the National Union of Rail, Marine and Transport Workers, a union representing railroad, guard and signal workers.
This is one of a series of strikes carried out by this class across the UK in recent months, and is expected to last 24 hours.
The TSSA union is also on strike. Independent serving the transport and travel industries, with thousands of members across the UK and Ireland.
The strike is a struggle between workers’ bodies with the government and railway companies over wages, job cuts and changes to terms and conditions of employment..
Still in the negotiations, it is still not possible to feel progress on the agreement agenda between the two parties. Mick Lynch, head of the RMT, described the talks with new Transportation Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan as a “good start”, but that “tangible changes” were needed.
The row over salary increases is a result of the inflation that has hit all of Europe, causing unions to demand sufficient adjustments to reflect the rising cost of living.
RMT also says that in addition to wages, Network Rail, one of the railway companies, is planning to cut 2,500 maintenance jobs to gain £2 billion in savings over the next two years.
