A case of monkeypox has been confirmed in southern Santa Catarina

The Epidemiological Surveillance Board of Santa Catarina (Dive-SC) confirmed a case of monkeypox in Braco do Norte, south of Santa Catarina. The information appears in the latest bulletin of the disease released by the agency on Monday the 21st. In total, 369 cases of the disease have already been confirmed in Santa Catarina. The highest number of cases occurs in Florianópolis with 136 records.

In Braco do Norte, according to a note from the city council, the confirmed case was a 46-year-old man who had traveled to Blumenau. Upon his return, he developed symptoms and sought special medical care, and was referred to epidemiological surveillance for evaluation.

“He was evaluated by the service, and presented with a clinical case compatible with the case, with multiple lesions. Notified by the municipality on 10/19/2022, through the Epidemiological Surveillance Service of the Municipality of Braço do Norte. On the same date, the material was collected. He did not need to be hospitalized,” the note reports.

According to the prefectural memorandum, the man was living with his mother and they were both in seclusion. Hospitalization was not necessary during the treatment of the disease. On October 26, the man and mother were discharged from the hospital.

After collecting the material on 10/19/2022, the sample was sent to Lacen for confirmation by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method, which was confirmed for monkeypox. The patient was living with a mother who was monitored and had no symptoms. Both were isolated and monitored according to the protocol and were discharged from the hospital without any complications,” the note states.

Confirmation was released on Monday, the 21st, by Dive after the release of the result of a counter-test for the exam taken on the 19th of October.

“The tests are carried out by Lacen and there is a processing period for confirmation and publication through the ESUS-Sinan system. The data from the epidemiological bulletin of DIVE / SC refer to cases that occurred in the previous week. The case was closed on 10/26/2022, during which time The result was waiting to be processed and disclosed,” according to a note from Braco do Norte City Council.

At the moment, there is no record of new issues or suspicions at Braço do Norte.
