DrAccording to air express statistics published by INE in January, “At national airports, 3.9 million passengers and 16,700 tons of cargo and mail were handled, which corresponds to changes of +84% and -0.4%, respectively, compared to January 2022.”.
Compared to January 2020, that is, before the outbreak of the pandemic that severely affected the sector, passenger traffic increased by 5.7% and freight and mail traffic decreased by 3.2%.
In the month under review, an average of 60,700 passengers disembarked daily at national airports, a value significantly higher than that recorded in January 2022 (31,900; +89.9%) and 5.4% higher than that recorded in January 2020 (57,600 ).
In terms of markets, France was the country of origin and the main destination for the flights.
However, Spain and the United Kingdom recorded the highest growth rate compared to January 2022, ranking second and third, respectively.
In January, Lisbon Airport handled 56.9% of all passengers (2.2 million, +84.8%), compared to the same month in the previous year (+2.7% compared to January 2020).
Faro Airport almost doubled (+90.7%) and recorded the highest growth rate compared to January 2020 (+11.7%), while Porto Airport accounted for 22.7% of all passengers handled, and compared to January 2022 increased by 88.1% (+1.2 % compared to January 2020).
The National Institute of Statistics stressed that Madeira Airport had the third largest number of passengers in January 2023 (313.7 thousand; +86.0%), surpassing Faro Airport.
