Put a stand on WhatsApp to fight fake news
Durigan is a lawyer graduated from the University of São Paulo (USP) and a master’s in law and legal research from the University of Brasília (UNB).
His career spanned more than 13 years in public bodies, however The most memorable experience on his resume is that of the head of public policies at WhatsApp, a subsidiary of Meta in Brazil.
The position was created in 2020 and the lawyer quickly took over. The company’s goal, in this area, was to invest in the fight against fake news, especially during 2022, the year of the elections.
In 2018, WhatsApp, the main means of communication for Brazilians, was largely responsible for the spread of fake news on the eve of elections.
In an interview with Estadão last year, Durigan stated that the Brazilian elections are “the most important in the world” for the company, saying that he, along with the global head of WhatsApp, has been in constant contact with the country’s authorities to work in the fight against disinformation.
In his tenure as head of public policy on the platform, since 2020, the company has already implemented measures such as partnerships with press agencies and fact checking, certification certification that a message has been sent multiple times, as well as incentives for users themselves.

Before joining WhatsApp, Dario Durigan had a long career in public service, working with Haddad on another occasion, as a special advisor for the city of São Paulo at the time when the current minister was the mayor.

- was a USP attorney in 2009;
- became Project Coordinator in the Strategic Management Department of AGU – Advocacia Geral da União, a position he held between 2010 and 2011;
- worked as an advisor to the Chief of Staff for Legal Affairs at Al Dar Al Madani between 2011 and 2015;
- Then, from 2015 to 2016, he was Special Adviser to the Mayor during Fernando Haddad’s administration in São Paulo;
- He returned to work as a lawyer at União Legal Consultancy in São Paulo, where he stayed from 2017 to 2020;
- Since 2020 he is the Head of Public Policy at WhatsApp Brasil.
If Haddad’s plans go well, Dorrigan will soon return to public service as head of the Treasury’s executive secretariat.
According to the ministry’s website, This secretariat is responsible for providing “direct and immediate” assistance to the Minister, and for helping to supervise and coordinate the activities of all other bodies in the Ministry.
