Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton praised Real Madrid’s Brazilian player Vinicius Junior on Thursday (25) for his reaction to the racist insults he heard in a recent La Liga match in Valencia.
“It’s devastating to think that in 2023 we still have to see and hear these things,” Hamilton said in statements to the press ahead of the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, which takes place this weekend.
“It brings me emotions from the things I’ve been through, whether it’s in the UK or when I was racing in Italy, France or Spain,” he said. “The things people say can hurt a lot. I think he was incredibly brave,” said the pilot, referring to Vinicius.
Hamilton himself has shown his support for the fight against racism on numerous occasions and has become a symbol of the cause in the sporting world.
