“Since the beginning of 2023, there have been historical maximums in the monthly values ​​of passengers at national airports,” the institute highlights INE in its “Air Transport Rapid Statistics” for May.

In the month under review, there was an average daily drop-off of about 100 thousand passengers at national airports, a value higher than that recorded in May 2022 (87.1 thousand; +15.0%) and 10.6% higher than what was verified in May 2019 (90.6 one thousand. ).

According to the National Institute of Statistics, 82.3% of passengers disembarking at national airports correspond to international traffic, reaching 2.6 million passengers, mostly from the European continent (70.1% of the total), an increase of 14.0% compared to May 2022.

The Americas was the second major source, concentrating on 8.6% of all disembarked passengers.

With regard to passengers on board, 81.9% of them represent international traffic, a total of 2.5 million, and the main destination is airports on the European continent (71.2% of the total), recording a growth of 14.3% compared to May 2022.

Airports in the Americas were the second major destination for departing passengers (7.6% of the total).

From January to May, the number of passengers handled at national airports increased by 33.6% compared to the same period in 2022 and 13.0% compared to 2019.

Lisbon Airport handled 51.8% of all passengers (12.9 million), having grown by 36.9% compared to the same period in 2022 (+10.1% compared to the same period in 2019).

Porto Airport accounted for 22.7% of all passengers and increased by 32.0% (+14.5% compared to the same period in 2019), while Faro Airport recorded a growth of 24.0% (+6.2% compared to the same period in 2019).

Looking at the volume of passengers that departed and departed on international flights between January and May 2023, the UK overtook France and emerged as the leading country of origin for flights, with a growth of 28.2% compared to the same period in 2022.

France took second place, recording an increase of 24.9%, but remained the main destination for flights, followed by the United Kingdom.

On the other hand, Spain ranked third as the main country of origin and destination.

With regard to the movement of goods and mail, it declined by 3.0% in May on an annual basis, to 19.1 thousand tons, down by 5.1% from May 2019.

In the first five months of the year, it recorded a slight decrease of 0.6%, and compared to the same period in 2019, it increased by 9.5%.
