According to WhatsApp, standard photos are usually between 1.5MP and 4MP (megapixels) in quality, while high-resolution photos are between 9MP and 16MP.

“High-resolution images will still be slightly compressed to make sure sending and receiving is still fast,” WhatsApp explained to g1.

The platform uses an image standard known as “Progressive JPEG”, which allows you to provide multiple levels of quality for an image in the same transmission.

“This means that if the person you’re sending it to has a poor or limited connection, they can still only download the standard version of the photo you sent in HD,” the app says.
