The Global Identity Project, aiming to use it as a digital RG through ‘eye images’, has already registered 2.2 million irises in 34 countries, including Brazil, but it cares about governments in terms of ‘privacy’.

The initiative has been tested for a month. The machine, called Orb, is an eye scanner, powered by artificial intelligence (AI) that is able to read the details of the iris, ensuring that it is a human eye and thus obtaining a unique record for each person.

The person responsible for the invention is Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, founder of ChatGPT and owner of Worldcoin. The CEO’s intention is to “carry out the biometric registration of eight billion people on Earth and create a kind of ‘global RG’, the world record,” according to O Globo.

Also according to the report, upon registering the iris, the first users of the project received 25 units of the Worldcoin (WLD) digital currency. At the cryptocurrency’s best moment, when it was priced at $2.50, the payout was equivalent to $62.50 (312 R$). Yesterday, WLD was trading at $1.54, according to CoinMarketCap.
“This monetization is linked to another desire: an AI-powered system that allows for the creation of a universal basic income. You could imagine a system like Worldcoin being used for universal basic income at some point,” Altmann explained.

However, in the midst of this ambitious initiative, the fate of data matters to governments, who are concerned about people’s privacy and the risks involved in this invasion of private information. Worldcoin is still under investigation in Germany, France and the United Kingdom.
