Climate change is having an impact on forests, local communities and indigenous peoples, Jorgensen and Marina Silva said in a joint statement, who need support to sustainably manage forests and promote trade in sustainably produced products.
The Amazon Fund was set up in 2008 to raise funds to combat deforestation and promote conservation of the world’s largest rainforest, with Norway making an initial contribution of US$1 billion. Germany has contributed to the fund, and more recently the United Kingdom and the European Union, while the United States plans to contribute $500 million over five years.
The ministers pledged to intensify efforts to halt biodiversity loss, combat deforestation, desertification, land degradation and drought, as well as restore degraded lands, according to the statement.
Jorgensen praised Brazil’s recent efforts in restoring and sustainably managing forests, as well as actively combating deforestation.
He said the Amazon Fund plays a critical role as a robust and transparent mechanism for paying for results, with strong governance, in supporting Brazil’s efforts to end deforestation.
The Danish Government Scholarship for the period 2024 to 2026 is subject to parliamentary approval.
Marina Silva said the proposed contribution to the Amazon Fund will support the federal government’s efforts to end deforestation in the Amazon by 2030 and contribute to promoting sustainable development in the region.
