From February onwards, the Qdenga vaccine, produced by the Takeda laboratory for dengue immunization, will be available on the Unified Health System (SUS) network.

In that first moment, Ministry of Health 521 cities from 16 states and the federal district elected to begin vaccination coverage efforts. These cities constitute 37 areas considered endemic to the disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Qdenga was added to the list of immunization agents available at SUS in December 2023, following analysis by the National Committee for Technology Integration at SUS (Conitec). Thus, Brazil became the first country to provide the vaccine for free to its population.

Coverage of target audience and cities

The priority group for dengue vaccination is adolescents aged 10 to 14 years. This specific population concentrates the largest number of hospitalizations per Dengue fever in Brazil. Currently, Qdenga is not approved for use in the elderly and in certain other specific groups.

Immunization should be done through a two-stage vaccination schedule, with the second application occurring three months after the first.
