UK investigates attempt to access Kate Middleton's medical records

A London clinic where Princess Catherine underwent surgery is suspected of trying to gain access to her medical records without permission, according to multiple sources, an inquest is being held today (20). The Princess of Wales, wife of the heir to the British throne, Prince William, underwent abdominal surgery at a London clinic on January 16, where she remained in hospital for ten days.

Kensington Palace, which handles communications for the Prince of Wales, did not provide details of the operation and insisted that Kate “remains private with her personal medical information”. This Wednesday's edition of tabloid The Mirror reported that “at least one member of the hospital's staff was caught” accessing Kate's medical records.

The Information Commissioner's Office, Britain's data protection and watchdog, said it had “received a report of the breach” and was “in the process of assessing the information provided”. “I understand the police have been called in to investigate the matter,” Maria Caulfield, undersecretary for health, told LBC radio.

London police, contacted by AFP, said they had not been asked to intervene in the case “at this time”. The London clinic, contacted by The Mirror, stressed that all patients “regardless of their medical condition are entitled to absolute privacy and confidentiality in relation to their medical information”.

“This matter is the responsibility of the London Clinic,” Kensington Palace pointed out. At the time of her admission to Kensington Hospital, Catherine indicated that she would not return to her official duties until the end of March. But the long absence of the princess, one of the most photographed women on the planet, has led to all sorts of rumors and speculation about her health. According to the British press, Kate will not return to official duties until mid-April.
