Blue holes are crater-like underwater geological formations that form in coastal areas
A discovery that shakes the world of science: The Tam Ja underwater cave, located in Mexico, has been revealed to be the deepest blue hole on the planet, reaching a depth of 420 metres. This information was published last Monday (29) by the magazine Frontiers in Marine Science.
Tam Ga was discovered in 2021, but measurements at the time indicated that its depth was 146 meters less than what has been revealed now.
This new measurement places Tam Ga as the deepest blue hole on record, surpassing the Sansha Yongle blue hole in southern China, which held the previous record.
Discovering the exact depth of Tam Ga Cave was made possible thanks to an expedition carried out in December last year by scientists who dived into the cave to assess its environmental conditions.
Equipped with conductivity, temperature and depth measuring devices, the scientists were able to make accurate measurements and confirmed the greatness of Tam Ga.
