The Guardian newspaper reported that Sunak used the announcement to praise the Conservatives amid the prospect of defeat.. “I cannot say the same about the Labor Party [sobre fazer o que é certo] Because I don't know what they offer. Actually, I don't think you know either. That's because they don't have a plan. No bold move. As a result, the future will be uncertain only for them.”
The incumbent Prime Minister criticized Opposition Leader Keir Starmer. “On July 5, either Keir Starmer or I will be Prime Minister. He has shown time and time again that he will take the easy way out and do anything to get power.”
Following the announcement, Starmer posted a video on social media in which he said it was “time for a change”. “Britain is great and something to be proud of, but after 14 years under the Conservatives nothing has worked.”
A Buckingham Palace spokesman said the royal family would cut back on engagements amid the campaign, The Guardian reported.. “The Royal Family – in line with normal practice – will postpone engagements that distract or detract from the election campaign. Their Majesties extend their sincere apologies to anyone who may be affected as a result.”
Crisis among conservatives
Elections were scheduled by the end of January 2025, but Sunak has so far limited himself to saying they will take place in the “second half” of the year.. Disastrous polls for the conservatives increased pressure on the prime minister to call voters to the polls.
