Labour wins UK election, returns to power after 14 years | World

In the United Kingdom, the Labour Party achieved a landslide victory.

The election required 326 of the 650 seats available in the UK Parliament to be won. At the time of the last update of this report, Labour had won 410 seats, compared with 119 for the Conservatives. See the numbers below.

With this victory, Keir Starmer of the Labour Party is expected to be appointed the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. In his speech, he said that the term will require “huge responsibility” and promised to work immediately to improve the country.

“We have to bring politics back into public service,” he said. “And show that politics can be a force for good.”

The result is being treated by the British media as a “washout” for the Labour Party. On the other hand, the Conservative Party led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak suffered a historic defeat.

Current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak conceded defeat and said he had called Starmer to congratulate him. He also promised a peaceful and orderly transition.
