MILAN (Reuters) – Italian police said in a statement on Sunday that police prevented 52 fans from attending the European Championship 2020 quarter-final match between England and Ukraine in Rome last Saturday because they did not comply with the restrictions imposed on Covid-19.
In an effort to stem the spread of the highly contagious Delta virus, Rome introduced a five-day quarantine last month for anyone arriving in Italy after having been in the UK for the past two weeks.
Crossing the names of passengers on flights from England and Ukraine with those who bought tickets, Italian police identified 52 fans who had not completed the required quarantine period. Italian police said in a statement that these fans had canceled their tickets.
Last week, Italy said England fans should not try to use loopholes in travel restrictions against Covid-19 to sneak into the Euro quarter-final match between England and Ukraine in Rome, even if they had tickets.
England beat Ukraine 4-0 on Saturday to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA European Cup 25 years ago.
