The existing upper floor has been converted into an open plan family space, linking the Victorian bedrooms below with the loft extension above.
The fully paneled walls can be folded up to connect to the rest of the house and share daylight from a large skylight in the high ceiling.
The loft is accessed via a steel and oak staircase, echoing the materials of the original staircase and alluding to the contemporary space above. Extended glass in the domed ceiling allows light to penetrate deep into the house.
Plywood panels line the loft space, with an integrated workspace and custom storage system, allowing the double bed to slide into the eaves.
A door leads from the master bedroom to the master bedroom. Armchairs, wardrobes and a freestanding bathtub create a haven that combines elements of the closet, living room and private bathroom.
Downstairs, the lively family bathroom contrasts with the natural materials used throughout the rest of the house.
The work carefully preserves the atmosphere that existed in the house. The panels connect the new rooms to the existing finishes and conceal new storage spaces and doors. Carefully inserted openings bring daylight into the rich interiors and make spatial connections that support shared family life.
