Drone footage on Tuesday (16) shows the rocky bottom of Lake Garda, in Italiain a tourist resort near the northern shores of the lake.
Lake Garda, the largest in Italy, is a major tourist destination, as are the many lakes and rivers in northern Italy. They are suffering from the severe drought that hits Europe.
“There is much less water, so you can see the rocks. Tourist Barbara Pazzoli said:
“There’s between 20 and 25 meters of exposed rock and that’s exciting. This hasn’t happened in years, at least in the years I’ve been here, I’ve never seen a show like this.”
The rock bottom, similar to the beach, arose due to the lack of rain and the constant use of water to irrigate agricultural fields during the summer.
“I am worried because I think it will take at least a few years to get back to normal after the situation this year. In my opinion, it will have to rain heavily for a few years to resolve the situation”, added Pazzoli.
Italy declared a state of emergency in July for areas around the Po River, the country’s longest river. The Po River is responsible for about a third of Italy’s agricultural production and is experiencing the worst drought in 70 years.
