Russian nuclear submarines fired missiles at targets in the Barents Sea during military maneuvers, Russian news agencies reported on Wednesday (19). The targets simulated ships belonging to an imaginary enemy.

The Barents Sea is located in the Arctic Ocean and covers the northern coast of Russia and Norway. Both countries have maritime territorial areas in the region. However, the testing was conducted in Russian waters.

The Russian Northern Fleet fired cruise missiles during the exercises. Two submarines were used to launch the devices against targets located at a distance of 170 km.

“According to objective observation data, the combat exercises were completed successfully,” Interfax said, citing a statement by Russian forces.

Russia closed the air and sea space where the tests were conducted in advance, ensuring that there were no commercial aircraft or ships in the area during the exercises.

The announcement of the tests comes at a time when Russian President Vladimir Putin is visiting North Korea. In recent years, the two countries have strengthened their relations, including in the military field.
