This Sunday (21), Alok Her work with Brazilian indigenous peoples was recognized by receiving an award at the Cannes Film Festival.

During an event promoted by the Better World Fund and organized by the Amazonia Fund/UNESCO Alliance on the French Riviera, the artist was recognized for his commitment to the rights and culture of indigenous peoples.

The Federal MP received the Alok Award on stage Celia Zachariaba and by cacique Mapo Honey Cois currently working in a telenovela Earth and passionFrom TV Globo. In her speech, Celia highlighted the partnership with the DJ and talked about the importance of promoting the Aboriginal agenda:

On behalf of our dear friend and DJ Alok, we are here to thank you for this award and to remind everyone of the importance of preserving the forest and indigenous sounds. It is not enough to know the song, the sacred prayers of indigenous peoples, it is also necessary to protect the voices and lives of those who sing and Alok understands this. This award is for him, because he learned not only how to sing, but also the importance of protecting and defending Aboriginal voices and bodies. I take this opportunity to say that the delimitation of Indigenous lands is urgent, as is the urgency to resist the approval of PL 490 and the time frame that changes the legislation for the delimitation of lands, makes contact with isolated peoples more flexible, prohibits the expansion of already demarcated lands and allows exploration of indigenous lands Indigenous miners.

Mabo added:

I want to say that I believe and trust each of you so much that we can make a difference not just in words, but in action. Make a difference to protect humanity, for a healthier climate, and cleaner water for generations to come, so we can keep the world in balance. Finally, I would like to thank UNESCO and all the brothers who welcomed us and opened the doors for us to be present here, making this spiritual alliance. Finally, I want to thank DJ and our brother Alok, because the future is the grandparents.

What a victory!

Alok’s tour of the United States prevented him from being in Cannes

Alok was unable to attend the event in person because he was on tour in the US, performing in Las Vegas at the 27th Electric Daisy Festival (EDC).

Despite this, he participated in the tribute via video call and affirmed his willingness to help indigenous peoples occupy the most diverse social spaces. Alok commented:

I am so excited: this award means a lot to me! I’m sad not to be with you, due to the tour I’m doing in North America. I thank the Better World Fund, Amazon Fund Alliance and Unesco, and I want to share this award with the Brazilian indigenous community who have fought for centuries to value their identity and their right to live. In Brazil, what is taught in schools even today is a colonial vision that ignores the importance of culture, knowledge and wisdom of a people who have lived for thousands of years respecting, celebrating and preserving nature.
