Following day and night, the GT3 follows the Porsche 911 and the CS follows the BMW M3. It makes sense that, like these standard cars, there is a focused and modified version with more aerodynamics, carbon fiber panels and sticky tires. It’s in the case of the 911 GT3, you have a special engine.

In the case of the Alpine A110, that kind of improvement isn’t obvious, as it’s almost an anti-track car. With relatively plush suspension, compact dimensions, light weight and moderate power, this is a car designed for fun on the road. It looks like it’ll keep you entertained on a track day.

As a result, the R makeover is a little uncomfortable – that is, in terms of visible additions. The carbon fiber bits aren’t as natural as the 911’s. They are hard to miss, as they include a bonnet, a diffuser, several skirts, wings and a swan-neck rear spoiler, but also wheels and, most controversial of all, a rear mirror. Carbon fiber isn’t known for its transparent properties, meaning you can’t see the back of the Alpine A110 R.

All of this adds up to an extra 29kg of downforce at top speed, and with the surprisingly comfortable Sabelt carbon fiber seats, these measures reduce weight by 34kg compared to the A110 S. Curios. Focal Hi-Fi, complete with speakers behind the seats.

With 296 hp, the A110 R doesn’t have more power than the A110 S, so the main dynamic changes are Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, unique anti-roll bars that are 10% stiffer up front and 25% stiffer. Front rear and a set of exclusive ZF coilovers.

They lower the ride height by 10mm and allow for an additional 10mm of lowering, and are adjustable for compression and rebound in 20 clicks.

That said, it’s the A110 that has more grip and intensity – things the A110 never does, which seems like a strange recipe.

Whether the A110 R’s driving experience is uncomfortable with the Alpine’s basic nature depends on your point of view.

If you’re impressed by the standard A110’s unique dynamic character, you’ll feel that 20% of the smooth sweetness has been traded for grip. A110 R is not for you.
