artificial intelligence: Yes, The world’s largest technology professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, has just released the results of the research “The Impact of Technology from 2024: An IEEE Global Study.” This is a survey of global technology leaders from the US, UK, China, India and Brazil. The study, which surveyed 350 chief technology officers (CTOs), CIOs (chief information officers) and IT managers, covers the top technology trends in 2024 and future trends.

The top five sectors that will be most affected by technology in 2024, according to survey answers, are:
- (41%) Communications (40% in 2023)
- (39%) Manufacturing (30% in 2023)
- (39%) Banking and financial services (33% in 2023)
- Automotive and transportation sector (31%) (39% in 2023)
- (31%) Energy (33% in 2023)
Artificial Intelligence will be the most important technology in 2024 – applied in diverse ways throughout the global economy
What areas of technology will be most important in 2024? Considering several areas of technology, when asked to choose the top 3 areas, participants responded:
- (65%) Artificial intelligence (AI), including predictive and generative AI, machine learning (ML), and natural language processing (NLP).
- (28%) Extended Reality (XR), including metaverse, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR)
- (24%) Cloud computing
Other key technologies in 2024 include 5G (22%) and electric vehicles (20%).
Artificial intelligence is highlighted
The research shows that in 2024, artificial intelligence applications and algorithms that can optimize data, perform complex tasks and make decisions with human accuracy will be applied in different ways. Among the top potential applications for AI in the coming year, the technology leaders surveyed chose the following:
- (54%) Identify and prevent real-time cybersecurity vulnerabilities and prevent attacks
- (42%) Increased efficiency in supply chain and warehouse automation;
- (38%) Help and accelerate software development and automate customer service
- (35%) Customer service automation
- (34%) Speed up the process of selecting, recruiting and hiring candidates
- (32%) Accelerate disease mapping and discovery of new medicines
- (31%) Automation and stabilization of utility energy sources
Survey respondents were asked what percentage of jobs across the global economy in 2024 would be enhanced by AI-based software, and between 26% and 50% of jobs were cited by 41% of respondents. More than a quarter (28%) cited between 1 and 25% of jobs, another 26% cited between 51 and 75% of jobs, and 5% cited between 76 and 100% of jobs.

Benefits of Extended Reality (XR), Digital Twin, and 5G and 6G technologies
According to IEEE research, virtual simulations using extended reality (XR) and digital twin technologies to efficiently and safely design, develop, and test prototypes and manufacturing processes will be important in 2024 (63% very important, 29% somewhat important).
Participants see greater benefits from 5G in the following areas in 2024, including a greater benefit to transportation infrastructure and sustainability than in 2023.
- (54% in 2024 and 2023) Telemedicine, including remote surgery, and health data transfer
- (46% in 2024 vs. 49% in 2023) Daily personal and professional communications
- (46% in 2024 compared to 56% in 2023) Distance education and learning
- (43% in 2024 vs. 51% in 2023) Live streaming of entertainment, sports and events
- (39% in 2024 compared to 29% in 2023) Transportation and movement control
- (27% in 2024 vs. 25% in 2023) Manufacturing/assembly
- (30% in 2024 compared to 23% in 2023) Reducing carbon footprint and energy efficiency
Nearly nine in 10 global technology experts (88%) agree that 6G will mostly be a work in progress by 2024, but should become the standard in the next three to five years. Furthermore, a large majority (94%) of global technology experts agree that the development of communications satellites for mobile communications will reach some rural and developed areas globally by 2024.

Artificial Intelligence | Don’t ignore quantity
Generative AI may continue to dominate the technology landscape, but other technologies such as quantum could have significant, if less realized, impacts (87% agree, including 51% strongly agree). Furthermore, 86% of respondents agree that quantum computing will receive more attention in 2024 due to its dramatically greater computing power – a trillion times higher than that of today’s most advanced supercomputers, as well as its application to cryptography and security at a later stage. Technologies that encourage sustainability will remain a priority. A large majority agree (92% agree, including 54% strongly agree) that they will prioritize sustainability goals from 2024 onwards, and any technologies their companies implement must be energy efficient and help reduce their carbon footprint.
Cybersecurity concerns persist
The cybersecurity concerns that are likely to be among the top 3 concerns for technology leaders in 2024 remain the same as last year: data center vulnerability (43% in 2024 and 2023), and cloud vulnerability (42% in 2024, down from 51% in 2023) and security issues related to a mobile and hybrid workforce/employees using their own devices (41% in 2024, down from 46% in 2023). However, the research reveals that other cybersecurity concerns are expected to increase in 2024, including ransomware attacks (37% in 2024 compared to 30% in 2023), and phishing attacks (35% in 2024 25% in 2023) and internal threats (26% in 2024 and 19% in 2023).
