An astronomer at the University of California at Riverside has discovered a giant gaseous planet similar to Jupiter
Sputnik – The planet found is TOI-2180 b, which is the same diameter as Jupiter but three times larger.
According to researchers, the mass of the planet is 105 times that of the Earth in elements heavier than helium and hydrogen. Moreover, the planet takes 261 days to complete one orbit.
Astronomers used computer algorithms to scan data collected by multiple telescopes. The researchers were looking for changes in the stars’ brightness, which could indicate that a star is orbiting a planet.
Tom Jacobs, an amateur astronomer, observed on February 1, 2020, while examining data collected by the TESS telescope, that the light from the star called TOI-2180 dimmed and then returned to its previous level of brightness over a 24-hour period.
After that, scientists noticed the gravitational force of the planet on the star, which allowed them to calculate its mass and estimate various possibilities of its orbit.
