This Saturday, July 9th, will mark the 650th anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship that launched the alliance between Portugal and the United Kingdom with a variety of initiatives, including a concert coordinated by the English National Ballet at 5:30pm at the Praga do Municipio in Prague. At night, the Theater Circo dresses up for a unity show, graced by famous Portuguese and British troupes.
Starting at 9:30 p.m., there will be a performance beginning with the world premiere of English National Ballet’s new work, choreographed by Renato Peroni de Castro. “If intelligence and art are of great help to me” (Luís de Camões), a small chamber ballet for four soloists using classical ballet, contemporary ballet and budo dance elements as techniques. Without a fixed plot, it’s an atmospheric three-part piece closely linked to the intricate music of Carlos Seixas.
Ingenuity, grace, art, melancholy, and humor—characteristics common to the Portuguese and the English—were represented here and formed the inspiration for this ballet. Rhys Yeomans, Emilia Cadorin, Victor Prigent, Miguel Angel Maidana are the choreographers.
Later, under the coordination of conductor Owen Rees, there will be a performance by the University of Oxford’s Queen’s College Choir with the Minho University Orchestra. Finally, the Wind Quintet of the Coldstream Guards Band will perform.
