Brazil is last in the ranking that evaluates the number of customs officers per thousand square kilometers

Brazil currently ranks last in the world ranking according to the number of customs officers. According to the data of the World Customs Organization (WCO), analyzed by Sindifisco Nacional, given countries with a population of more than 10 million, Brazil ranks last in the number of servers per thousand square kilometers.

According to Sindifisco Nacional, although there are trained servers, the number of customs officers has decreased dramatically in recent years. In 2013, according to the union, in the country there were 4,468 employees who worked to control the entry and exit of goods at the border. By 2020, the number had fallen to 2,650, down more than 40%.

With 184 member states, the World Customs Organization issues reports covering more than 98% of world trade, including Brazil. Topping the list in terms of regulating its currencies is the United Kingdom, which has 263 servers per thousand square kilometers.

Brazil is at the bottom of the ranking, with only 0.31 customs per thousand km, a figure that, according to OMA, is 850 times lower than the first European place. Even if compared to neighboring Argentina, the number of tax auditors per thousand square kilometers is about 20 times less: there are 6.32 servants per thousand square kilometers.

“The situation that is happening at customs is the same that we see within federal revenue in general. However, what we are seeing from the federal government is a contrary signal to solve the problem, with the agency’s budget being cut in half in 2022 and the publication of ordinances facilitating the entry of goods without examination. It is An attitude of denial to a very serious problem”, assures the president of Sindifisco Nacional, Isac Falcão.
