247 – A group of about 30 businessmen from Brazil will travel to Havana next Monday (4) with the aim of exploring ways to boost bilateral trade with Cuba, Bloomberg reports. The trip will include businessmen from the air transport, agriculture, energy and health sectors. This initiative is part of the latest efforts by the government of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to restore relations between the two countries.
This four-day business mission will take place before Lula’s scheduled visit to Cuba, where he will meet with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel and participate in the G-77+China summit. >>> Celso Amorim criticizes the sanctions and says Brazil is seeking to finance exports to Cuba again
Although relations between Brazil and Cuba weakened for ideological reasons during the Jair Bolsonaro administration, they were not completely severed. Since resuming the presidency in January, Lula has revitalized relations with Havana, including meeting Diaz-Canel at the Global Finance Summit in Paris earlier this year.
The trip will be led by the head of the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (APEX), Jorge Viana. “We have the opportunity to resume our commercial relations after the previous Brazilian government left Cuba aside,” Viana said in a note. “It makes no sense for Brazil to turn its back on the countries of Central America and the Caribbean, including Cuba, as we have done in the past four years.”
According to Apex, the best export opportunities to Cuba lie in the sectors of food, industrial machinery, transportation equipment, and chemical products. The agency also expects to open a commercial air link between Sao Paulo and Havana, according to a statement.
