Brazilian striker sentenced to 4 years in prison in Portugal

Fabio Lemos, 30, was sentenced to four years and four months in prison for the xenophobic attack on Brazilian civil engineer Saulo Juca in Braga. PortugalThe verdict was issued on Friday, the 12th of this month.

On June 10, 2023, Saulo Juca, born in Pernambuco, was violently attacked. He holds Portuguese nationality and was approached by a man who questioned his nationality in a café on Portugal Day.

The victim reported that he was kicked in the face and chest. The attack took place between 8 and 9 p.m., when Saulo was talking to the cafe owner.

The attacker, who was clearly drunk and accompanied by his mother, entered the establishment and, after noticing Saulo's Brazilian accent, allegedly began the attack. “While he was hitting me, his mother said: 'You're going to be arrested again,'” Saulo said in an interview with G1 portal in 2023.

According to Saulo, xenophobic comments are common in his daily life, but he has never experienced direct aggression. Due to his injury, he will need three weeks to recover.

After the incident, the Brazilian Consulate General in Porto announced that it was ready to provide assistance, but could not disclose specific details due to the Access to Information Law.

About 15,000 Brazilians live in Braga, which has a population of about 200,000. In addition to them, there are also immigrants of various other nationalities.
