Canada and the UK begin the process for a new trade agreement

The Canadian Minister Mary Ng and her British envoy Ann-Mary Travelyan announced that the first round of talks would begin next week on March 28 and that a final agreement would be reached within a year.

Ng welcomed the talks with the United Kingdom on “a historic new agreement” which the EFE News Agency reported would be “raising the bar” for women, minorities and small businesses.

The UK Department for International Trade said on Twitter that the agreement would open up new opportunities for e-commerce, women’s economic development and the climate crisis.

In 2021, bilateral trade between Canada and the United Kingdom was worth about 30.67 billion, of which 17.5 billion was Canadian exports.

The UK withdrew from the European Union (EU) and has a trade agreement with Canada, forcing Ottawa and London to sign a provisional agreement by the end of 2020 to protect bilateral trade.
