Circular dances consist of a series of sequential and rhythmic movements, which seek to promote a sense of harmony and community spirit, based on the natural act of holding hands and leaning on each other. On May 6th and 7th, starting at 10:30 a.m., many circle dance professionals will gather at a meeting at Sesc Santo André to share and celebrate this tradition through presentations, workshops, leadership circles, dances, and experiences.

All activities will be open to all audiences and free of charge. “Dancing on Roots and Interconnected Relationships” will be the theme of the event, which aims to develop a space for communication between people and celebrate life and unity in dance. In addition to the experiences offered by the practice, the festival environment was developed by the Meio-fio group, a scenography studio for art education and weaving. Embedded lines, arches, plants, mandalas, embroidery, and lace will weave connections between the low and high planes, as well as bring nature into the space.

Sesc Santo André has in his regular program the Mandalando project, which every Thursday presents an open class aimed at all enthusiasts and those interested in circular dances. Its frequent practice brings physical and mental benefits, and can improve coordination, posture, flexibility, and physical resistance, as well as reduce stress and anxiety. In addition to its accessibility, Circular Dance is a form of physical expression that transcends social and cultural barriers, allowing for a deep connection between participants. With their roots in human history, they have much to offer those who want to explore and experience new ways of connecting with the world and with themselves. To participate, just show up. All activities will be open and free, and in them the participant will have the opportunity to plunge into the diverse and unique world of circle dances.

With Vanery de Oliveira

Round Dance Festival Ball – With the voices of Pogras, Guatasara Montero and Joao Paulo Pessoa

To conclude the first day of the festival, the Faucis Pogras, along with Guataçara Monteiro and João Paulo Passoa, will present a grand dance full of Brazilian music and stories from the land. Vozes Bugras emerged from a pun with Mistério das Vozes Búlgaras, and it is not merely a matter of chance, because the derogatory name, bugre, given by the colonists to the Brazilian indigenous peoples, comes from the French term bougre, referring to the “Bulgarian heretics”, resisting the occupation of their lands in centuries past, and extended to anyone who was considered rude or savage, contrary to the exclusive notion of European civilization. Hence, the basic concept of searching the group’s repertoire, looking for traditional manifestations that indicate the cultural identity of the Brazilian people, was born.
