Mice are small mammals that belong to the Muridae family. Because of their ability to adapt to many different environments, they can be found in many parts of the world.
These animals are incredibly diverse, totaling more than 2,200 different species, which vary in color, habits, size, and habitat. The most common are the country mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus), the house mouse (Rattus norvegicus) and the black mouse (Rattus rattus).
Their cutting teeth help to gnaw through hard materials such as electrical wires and wood. They are agile, able to easily climb walls and other types of obstacles, and have easy access to high places, where they can find shelter, food, and breed.
Mice are omnivores and feed on fruits, seeds, insects, vegetables, small vertebrates, and human leftovers. They are considered urban pests because they multiply rapidly and transmit diseases.
Despite their bad reputation, they are important to the ecosystem, being prey for predators such as snakes, birds of prey, and even other rodents.
