Chelsea has a new owner. According to a statement released by the club tonight, the consortium led by American baseball team L.A. Dodgers member Todd Boehley has won the competition and will take command of the Blues by the end of this month.
The purchase was signed in partnership with Clearlake Capital Fund, and negotiations were sent to the British government and the Premier League (the entity that regulates the Premier League) for approval. According to a statement from Chelsea, 2.5 billion pounds (about 15.6 billion Brazilian riyals) will be used to purchase the club’s shares. The amount will be deposited into a frozen UK bank account, with the goal of donating 100% to charitable causes, then-owner Roman Abramovich confirmed.
In addition, the consortium promises to invest 1.75 billion pounds (about 11 billion Brazilian reais) in club divisions, such as Stamford Bridge, the women’s team and the Chelsea Foundation.
In a statement posted on social media, the club said: “The sale must be completed by the end of May, subject to all necessary regulatory approvals. More details will be provided at that time.”
In addition to the fund, Boehly is entering the business with the help of fellow Dodgers owner Mark Walter and two other influential names in the European economy: Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss and British real estate developer Jonathan Goldstein.
The Daily Mail reported in location The total value of the acquisition is about 4 billion pounds (about 25 billion Brazilian riyals).
Conversations opened after roman Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea FC at the time, to part with his debt of 1.6 billion pounds (about 10 billion Brazilian reais) that he loaned to the club.
In recent months, the team has been operating under a special license drawn up by the British government, which has imposed sanctions on Abramovich over his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin who ordered the invasion of Ukraine. This measure will expire at the end of this month.
From the next few days, the Premier League organization must oblige the club to apply for a new license from the government, this time to formally complete the acquisition process.
