China diverts 65.4 billion cubic meters of water to the north

The eastern and central routes of China’s South-to-North Water Diversion Project have transported 65.4 billion cubic meters of water so far, official data showed on Tuesday (September 12, 2023).

“Hundreds of cities in the north, including major cities such as Beijing, Tianjin and other smaller cities, have relied on the project as their main source of water.”said Jiang Shuguang, President of China South-North Water Conversion Co., Ltd.

The two roads will benefit more than 176 million people and will save 10 billion cubic meters of water for environmental purposes. Jiang noted that this diversion has reversed the decades-long decline in groundwater levels in the north and revived many rivers and lakes.

The Central Route begins at Danjiangkou Reservoir in central China’s Hubei Province and passes through Henan and Hebei before reaching Beijing and Tianjin. Water supply began in December 2014. The eastern route began operation in November 2013, transporting water from eastern China’s Jiangsu Province to Tianjin and Shandong.

Jiang said that the country is intensifying its efforts in planning and early preparations for the western route and the new construction of the eastern and central routes.
