The manufacturer, the Royal Mint, explained that the piece was part of a new UK collection and represented local flora and fauna:

“It's an honor to reveal that King Charles III's £1 coin is now in circulation,” said Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coins.

“We hope the designs in all of the appeals will spark important conversations about the conservation of these important species.”

New coin collection

In total, there are eight new coins with images of Atlantic salmon, puffins and hazel dormouse, a small rodent and other animals.

“Unveiled in October 2023, the new designs highlight His Majesty King Charles III's interest in conservation. The number representing the value of each coin has been expanded to help children understand the value of money.”
