Creepy: Stunning photos show waterspout hitting beach in Italy; watch video

A water column caused panic among swimmers and residents of the Italian coast, on Monday, August 19, 2024. Videos circulating on social media showed the phenomenon approaching the coast, which caused concern among those present.

The scene was captured in Capo di Leuca, in the Puglia region, by swimmer Elena Severino. Amid concerns expressed by others at the scene, she decided to film the impressive column of water as it moved over the sea.

What is water column?

A waterspout is a weather phenomenon consisting of a column of air rotating above the surface of the water. At its upper base, it is carried by storm clouds, giving it a more threatening appearance. This type of event is common in coastal areas and can vary in intensity, from simple manifestations to very strong waterspouts.

How does water flow occur?

The process of water column formation begins with specific weather conditions. The main factors involved are:

  • Climate conditions: The presence of storm clouds is necessary for the formation of water springs.
  • Temperature difference: The water temperature must be higher than the air temperature to facilitate the rotary motion.
  • Wind: Strong winds help form the distinctive funnel.

The impact of watercourses can vary, depending on their density and proximity to populated areas. In general, they can cause:

  1. Panic and confusion: As we saw in the case of Cabo de Lucca, many people get scared when they see a waterspout approaching.
  2. Swimmers and boats hazards: The force of the water column can be enough to capsize boats and injure people nearby.
  3. Material damage: In more severe cases, they can cause damage to coastal infrastructure.

What do you do when you see a water column?

If you are at the beach and see a waterspout, it is important to take some immediate precautions to ensure your safety:

  • Stay away from water: The water column can move rapidly towards the shore.
  • Searching for shelter: If possible, move to a sturdy, secure structure.
  • Avoid taking pictures: Although it is tempting to record this phenomenon, safety should be the priority.
