Google has banned 151 apps from the Play Store, the official Android store, after it was discovered that they were part of an SMS fraud campaign. According to Avast, which investigated the case, the apps were disguised as a variety of legitimate tools.
In the list there are photo editors, camera filters, games and QR Code readers. The fraud occurred when users signed up for a paid SMS service without consent. So the cybercriminals stole the money.
According to Avast, when installing any of these applications, many data of the victim, including the location, were already stolen. Then she was automatically subscribed to this SMS service, which can cost upwards of $40 a month.
