For the first time in 35 years, the amount spent on vinyl sales exceeded that of CDs in the UK. CD sales are declining year over year, but demand for LPs continues to grow. According to the newspaper GuardianVinyl numbers have continued to grow for 15 years and reached 5.5 million units this year.
The main reason for the increase in sales this year was singer Taylor Swift’s album Midnights, which sold 80,000 copies in the UK alone. In second place comes Harry Styles’ album Harry’s House. Third is Arctic Monkeys’ new album, The Car.
The Midnights album also broke another record. With over 800,000 copies sold worldwide, it was the first LP to sell equivalent sales to its CD counterpart in three decades. According to NME magazine’s website, vinyl last surpassed CD sales in 1987. The best selling records of the year were Michael Jackson’s Bad, Dirty Dancing soundtrack and Armas e Rosas’ Appetite for Destruction. .
