The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, warned this Tuesday, 23, of the dangers of US political leaders failing to reach an agreement to raise the federal government’s debt ceiling, exposing the country to the danger of default. “It is clear that failure to reach an agreement on the debt ceiling will have a detrimental effect on the US economy and the world,” she told a news conference focused on the Fund’s review of the UK.
Georgieva said the discussions about the US debt ceiling “have been quite tense, but they always lead to resolution.”
She said she was “eager” to find a solution again, given the potential “unwanted” repercussions.
Georgieva added that she hoped that talks on a decision on the issue would not continue in Washington “until the last minute.”
