Contrary to the statements of Anna Moser, Minister for Sports, video games continue to be officially recognized as a sport.
This week, the International Olympic Committee announced that Fortnite will be part of Olympic Esports Week, which takes place in June 2023 in Singapore. The popular Battle Royale game will be part of the new ‘Sports Shooting’ section of the event.
Fortnite is one of the most popular games today, and like many other games, it has tournaments that are part of the esports ecosystem. Although the legality of this type of sport is still questioned by some authorities, we cannot deny that it is becoming more popular with each passing year.
For Fortnite’s inclusion in Cyber Olympics Week, the game will have a dedicated island for use in the tournament, where 12 players from the 2023 Fortnite Champion Series have been invited to compete.
Designed to reflect the shooting competition of esports, the specially designed Fortnite Creative Island will put the sharp aiming accuracy of shooters to the test and see them navigate the game environment as they compete to become winners of the eSports Olympic Series.
The Fortnite contenders will battle for Olympic gold on Saturday, June 24, 2023, with other titles like Gran Turismo 7, NBA 2K23 and Eleven Table Tennis also making their way into the esports schedule. Tickets are on sale now for $10 to $15.
Are we seeing video games finally become the new official face of sports?
