Local authorities reported that four police officers were killed and four others were injured in an exchange of gunfire on Monday (29), during an operation to arrest a man in the southeastern state of South Carolina.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police reported on the X social media network that the suspect was found dead in the house where the arrest would take place.

Agents came to a home to arrest the suspect who opened fire on the group. The security force said that the police responded and the confrontation began, which lasted approximately three hours.

On Monday, the Ministry of Justice announced the killing of the city's deputy mayor and two special unit agents. But a few hours later, local police reported that one of the injured “died during the night.”

The White House announced that President Joe Biden expressed his “condolences and support to the community.” Local police chief Johnny Jennings said officers came under fire while trying to locate a man suspected of possessing firearms.

Officers responded and killed the suspect, Jennings added, before calling the day “absolutely tragic for the city of Charlotte and for the work of law enforcement.” A 17-year-old man and woman were arrested.
