The BBC has announced that former England player Gary Lineker will be removed from his “Match of the Day” commentary slot after the commentator and presenter criticized the UK government and its new immigration policy.
These comments were made on Lineker’s Twitter page. The former footballer said the new measures on migration policy were “terrible”, referring to them as “what was done in Germany in the 30s”, referring to the Nazi regime.
The BBC asked Gary Lineker to follow up and delete the comments, which the “Match of the Day” co-ordinator reportedly refused.
Now, following the impasse, the British broadcaster has deemed Lineker’s activity on social networks “a breach of our guidelines” and that the commentator should “avoid taking sides on political issues or controversies”.
“He will be sidelined until there is an agreement and a clear understanding of his behavior on social media,” he said, according to the BBC.
In response, some of the show’s key commentators announced that they would not be participating in this weekend’s broadcast.
Ian Wright was the first to cancel his appearance, followed by Alan Shearer. Jermaine Jenas and Micah Richards aren’t scheduled to appear on this week’s broadcast, but have promised they won’t either if they get invited.
Former England all-rounder Alex Scott has also indicated that he will not take part in the “match of the day”.
In response, the BBC announced that this version of the show would focus “on the action of the games without presentation or studio commentary”.
