George Clooney, Michael Douglas, Rob Reiner and other prominent supporters of Joe Biden and the Democratic Party are calling on the current US President to withdraw his candidacy for re-election.

“Biden is not the same anymore,” Clooney said. Michael Douglas noted that “it's hard to imagine Biden serving out his entire term if he's re-elected.”

See what celebrities who support Biden, but are calling for him to withdraw his re-election bid, are saying:

In an opinion piece published in the New York Times, Clooney, who said he is a personal friend of Biden's, said he met the president three weeks ago and found him to be “the same man we all saw in the election debate” against Donald Trump in June.

“It’s devastating to say this, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago is no longer the big name he was in 2010. He’s not even the Biden of 2020. He’s the same guy we all saw in the last debate. Four years on, he’s won many of the battles he’s fought, but the battle he can’t win is against time.

After Clooney's speech, Michael Douglas also spoke. He told the BBC in an interview that it was “hard to imagine Joe Biden serving out his entire term if he were re-elected.”

Director Rob Reiner posted a message on X (formerly Twitter) saying that Biden “served the United States with honor, decency and dignity, but it is time for Joe Biden to step aside.”

“We love and respect Joe Biden. We recognize all he has done for the country. But democracy is facing existential threats. We need someone younger to take over. Joe Biden must resign.”

Actor and screenwriter John Cusack retweeted Reiner's message on social media, expressing his support for the arguments. Cusack stated that Reiner was “right”.

“It’s time for Biden to pass the baton,” said actress and activist Mia Farrow. Otherwise, she said, “we will lose the Senate, we will lose the House, and we will lose democracy.”

However, she says that if Biden chooses to follow him, she will vote for him, but she notes that “he is losing. We cannot give our country to Trump.”

As writer Stephen King commented, “It is time for Biden to announce that he will not run for re-election.”

Documentary writer and filmmaker Michael Moore said Biden needs to resign and that Vice President Kamala Harris will complete his mission. “Biden has to do the right thing,” Moore said.
