What is a solar space farm?

The space solar farm consists of giant solar panels orbiting the Earth. Inventors considered the sky to be the next frontier for clean energy because of the intensity of sunlight that can be captured in space.

In space, sunlight is about ten times stronger than on Earth, and can be captured 24 hours a day, rather than just during the day.

Last October, the European Space Agency (ESA) revealed its plan to create a solar park floating 36,000 kilometers above Earth.

The UK government has allocated £6 million to space solar research projects in Britain and another £5 million to an international project called CASSIOPeiA studying space solar energy. CASSIOPeiA, also based in Harwell, is one of the organizations overseeing the project.
