The Eris variant, first identified in early July, is spreading around the world and has already entered the World Health Organization’s list of coronavirus strains of concern. Derived from Ômicron, Iris has been described as highly contagious. A new study shows that although the number of serious cases in the world is not increasing, it is contagious and can escape vaccine antibodies more easily.

Discoveries about the IRIS variable
- The German Primate Center – Leibniz Institute for Primate Research in Göttingen, Germany, investigated the characteristics of line EG.5.1, nicknamed Iris.
- Scientists have found that this variant is not necessarily more infectious than others, but rather infects people’s host cells more effectively because of its ability to avoid neutralizing antibodies.
- These neutralizing antibodies are produced by our immune system after immunization with vaccines, which have even trained our bodies to fight new variants.
- In practice, they bind to the spike protein of the Covid virus, the protein responsible for infection, and prevent it from entering our cells. This process is known as neutralization, because the virus is unable to infect.
- However, this process is not always 100% effective because Covid variants evolve to circumvent these mechanisms. This is what happened with Iris: she was able to escape the neutralizing antibodies and continue spreading the virus in the body.
The vaccine is a protection against IRIS and other Covid variants
Scientists analyzed cases of vaccinated people infected with the Iris variant and concluded that it is easier to escape these antibodies and continue infecting cells.
However, precisely because of prior vaccination, this ability to evade antibodies is not sufficient to undermine immunity. If, on the one hand, the cases of this variant are increasing due to its contagiousness, on the other hand, there has been no significant increase in serious events or related diseases.
Other vaccines and new formulations are being studied to be increasingly able to neutralize coronavirus mutations. According to the site Express MedicalAn immunological tool based on the XBB.1.5 strain, known as Kraken, is supposed to be developed later this year.
