Jesse Marsh believes his record in the United States shows that Leeds United do not need to give up on their high-energy plan to win in the British heat wave.
Leeds pressing play depends on intensity, at first under Marcelo Bielsa and then March they did more sprints in the Premier League last season.
But the American is confident his style of play can work against Southampton on Saturday, where temperatures are expected to reach 90 degrees, and has developed a habit of beating the New York Red Bulls in sweltering conditions during his training period.
He said, “One thing about sports in the United States in the summer is that it’s always hot, it’s really intense, so there are things I learned about heat and fatigue management. When I was in New York, one of the questions was, ‘Can you play press football in the summer?'” And in fact, our start record above 90 was really strong.”
Marsh has made seven signings this summer, with former Wigan and Everton player Joel Robles joining this week as third goalkeeper, and he is looking to add a central attacking midfielder. Patrick Bamford, who missed much of last season, is available, but Marsh wants options beyond versatile duo Rodrigo and Dan James and young Joe Gilhardt.
He added: “We are evaluating the right striker but Patrick being fully fit helps us. We have some flexibility as Rodri can play there and Dan plays there. Jovi [Gelhardt]I consider one of the first team group.”
Luis Sinistera is ready to make his Southampton debut after picking up a hamstring injury in pre-season. The Colombian was signed to replace Rafinha when last season’s top scorer left for Barcelona.
Sinistera, who scored 23 goals for Feyenoord last year, is expected to make his debut for St Mary’s as a substitute. Marsh added, “We were careful with him, but he looked so good that we put him in for training. He’s not 100% fit, but there’s a good chance he can help us with limited minutes.”
Captain Liam Cooper and Adam Forshaw are also available again as Leeds’ injury problems waned, while Stewart Dallas is back at training camp as he continues to recover from a broken leg, although there is no timetable for what Northern Ireland can play again.
Junior Firpo and Luke Ailing are close to a comeback, while winger James is eligible again after missing Saturday’s win over Wolverhampton by suspension.
