Moderate Candidate Wins Iran's Presidential Election

Masoud Pezeshkian In the early hours of Saturday morning (6), the Iranian authorities announced the election of a new president for Iran. He was running in the second round against conservative diplomat Saeed Jalili.

Voting was extended three times before closing. However, the election saw low turnout, with turnout around 50%. According to official data, Pezeshkian received 53% of the vote.

The new president, 69, advocates Iran's rapprochement with Western countries, such as the United States, to end sanctions that are hurting the Iranian economy.

Criticizing moral policies in Iran, Pezeshkian proposes easing the law on the mandatory use of the hijab for women.

On the other hand, Pezeshkian stated that he will not make radical changes to the Iranian religious system. He also indicated that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will have the final say in decisions.

However, a portion of the population believes that Pezeshkian’s government will represent Iran’s openness to relations with other countries. His campaign has received support from many prominent Iranian politicians, including former presidents.
